The stranger part of this story, though, came after she was asked on television whether she had been involved in developing the strategy and she said no, she hadn't. That's even if consultations and development of the strategy largely took place in 20 - before she was named Australian of the Year. While Tame is one of the most powerful and eloquent advocates for victims of child abuse and for social and legal reform, she does not claim to have any academic or specialist qualifications on the subject that would have meant she should necessarily be consulted about the strategy.īut, having elevated her to the position of Australian of the Year because of her advocacy work, it does seem a bit weird not to consult her in some meaningful way. A controversy broke ahead of the strategy's release about whether she had been consulted about the strategy. This brings us to Grace Tame, the Australian of the Year, and a disconnect in messaging and communications.
Of having more focus on the optics than the serious stuff. There is an additional rod that the government seems to have created for its own back on such strategy documents: the perception that it is inclined to be all announcement, no delivery.
As with all such things, though, the question is how effectively it addresses the problem. The government is indeed to be applauded for having a national strategy. Scott Morrison said the government's new child sexual abuse strategy is a "10 year whole-of-nation framework" and "the first of its kind".
